United States National Parks

The United States has 63 national parks, which are Congressionally-designated protected areas operated by the National Park Service. Thirty states and two U.S. territories have a total of 63 national parks. National parks are designated for their natural beauty, unique geological features, diverse ecosystems and recreational opportunities. The U.S. National Park Service was founded in 1916, however on March 1, 1872, President Ulysses S. Grant designated Yellowstone as the first national park in the United States and the world. The state with the most national parks is California with nine, followed by Alaska with eight, Utah with five, and Colorado with four.
